5:00 am
celebrate the giants world series win on this monday, october 29th. this is "today in the bay." good morning and thanks. i'm laura garcia-cannon. jon kelley is off this morning. giants are the new world series champions, and a big story this morning is redemption. barry zito did it in game one with a huge win over detroit and last night pablo sandoval continued his path to redemption going from bench warmer in the 2010 world series to 2012 world series mvp. we've got team coverage and all things giants this morning. bob redell awaiting the team's homecoming at at&t park. christie smith keeping an eye on the fan celebrations this morning, but let's begin with lawrence scott live from detroit. he was inside the locker room during last night's postgame celebration.
5:01 am
i bet you smell like champagne, lawrence. >> reporter: well, laura, i showered so not anymore. but i tell you what, the sun icoming up over detroit right now. as the sun set on a remarkable season for the giants last night. champions. as you talked about pablo sandoval taking that mvp, this is something that has been tremendous. the story of pablo sandoval this season on the field and what he did to set a tone in game one carried through. we talked to pablo and many of the other giants after the game. take a listen. >> excited, man, excited. you go through your career and never lost the fight. >> everybody wants to look for a story book ending. for your career is this a beautiful story book beginning and middle? >> yeah. we would love to do this a lot more down the years. i'm extremely happy to be able
5:02 am
to do it in this giants uniform. >> reporter: watching your team bring this thing home has to mean everything to you. >> it does. like i just said, the cliche of a dream come true, but this really is. you sit back an think about something you dreamed about your whole life actually coming to be a real thing, it's an amazing feeling. >> reporter: the perseverance to be here and make this happen for the team, for everybody involved in this organization, what does this stand for here in detroit, this sweep, this win? >> you know, it's just beyond. it's beyond anything i could have imagined. you know, it's such a blessing to be able to experience this. >> reporter: how great is this, angel? >> oh, this is unbelievable, man. this is a dream come true. being able to win the world series after a lot of obstacles, it doesn't get any better than this. >> reporter: and the list impose on and on and on. not just angel pagan but marco
5:03 am
scutaro, buster posey. we'll talk about him when we see you next. that guy is unbelievable. not hitting so well during the world series until last night, a two-run homer that really put this thing on track for the giants. extra inning drama, what a story. we'll have so much more from detroit as the sun will be up in just a bit. it will be a great day, back to san francisco, the giants arriving. >> it was a great game to watch. fans already gathering at at&t park where the giants are expected to arrive later this afternoon. that is where bob redell is standing by right now. he's got more details on the team's upcoming victory parade as well. good morning, bob. >> reporter: good morning to you, laura. yeah, you've got 30 to 40 diehard fans here at the 2nd street gate hoping that the information we gave them is wrong, that they are going to be arriving at 3:00 this afternoon. it's not going to be like it was in 2010 when they showed up around 5:00 this morning and brought out the trophy.
5:04 am
we have confirmed through sfo their arrival is not till 3:00. the second most popular person after the giants, the guy driving the san francisco chronicle truck. these fans swamped him. they get their fans on that headline from the chronicle saying "giants sweep!" same thing when the examiner guy dropped it off for the box. these are going to be huge pieces of mem boorabilimemorabi >> these guys are great, they did it again, twice in three years, you can't ask for really too much more than that. >> that game was unreal, it was incredible. we all love the giants but i don't think anybody thought they would take it in four. that was just insane. >> reporter: mayor ed lee's office has told us that the victory parade will be this wednesday at 11:00 up market street. it will start at the foot of market, head down market and go over to the civic center plaza where we imagine there will be
5:05 am
some sort of celebration. so there will a ticker tape parade down market. in 2010 it wound its way through downtown. this time it's a straight shot. we assume it's starting at justin herman, again, at 11:00 a.m. this wednesday. arrival for the team on their charter plane to sfo we are told by the airport, not until 3:00 this afternoon, which means they could be here at the park at 3:30, 4:00, depending on drive time. reporting live here at at&t park, bob redell, "today in the bay." even though the giants were ho not at home, fans were glued to their screens. >> what's really fun about being out here is there's so many people, you feel the energy. you hear people screaming let's go giants and you just want to scream with them. >> fans found it hard to hold back that enthusiasm. an estimated 10,000 people turned out to watch the giants reclaim the title of world
5:06 am
champions. look at the aerial shot showing just a sea of people celebrating in the streets there around at&t park. good for them. celebrations lasted into the early morning across most of the bay area, but in san francisco, things got a little out of hand. fires, even injuries, the s.w.a.t. team called in to restore order. christie smith is live in san francisco with some of the damage from all that celebrating. good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you, laura. we're about a block away from where bob redell was on the other side of at&t park. believe it or not, there are still some giants fans in jerseys and hats walking around yelling, screaming and celebrating. but overall much quieter that it was earlier. department of public works cruicrew been out here. the streets are totally wet, which is from cleaning up the streets after celebrations went way too far overnight. people set small fires in garbage cans and dumpsters.
5:07 am
they were dancing, screaming, yelling, in some cases getting up on buses. one car actually turned over. this going on from the ballpark all the way up to market street. san francisco police in riot helmets came out to try and control the crowd but that was tough because there were just so many people out here. some businesses had their windows broken out. we spoke with one woman about how the whole thing turned sideways. >> you can celebrate the giants, that's fine. it's good that they won the world series but why do you have to throw things into buildings? i don't understand. >> reporter: now, in the mission district people set dumpsters and garbage cans on fire between 16th and 24th street. san francisco police and fire lined the streets there. fans carried brooms symbolizing a sweep of the tigers. we do have calls into san francisco police this morning about how many people were arrested. back here live i wanted to show you, kind of hard to see, but there is some toilet paper
5:08 am
hanging from the trees and also a sign got knocked over, but overall much quieter than it was before. reporting live in san francisco, christie smith, "today in the bay." >> our coverage of the new world series champions continues all morning long. stick around for more live reports from detroit and san francisco. and there's always nbcbayarea.com for all the information on the team. towards the top and center of the page there's a tab called game four images. you don't want to miss that. also in the news this er morning hurricane sandy bearing down on the east coast. the hurricane is expected to make landfall later today. thousands of flights have been cancelled, schools closed, train service suspended and the new york stock exchange shut down. hundreds of thousands of people moving to higher ground and even more hunkering down. emergency shelters across the east coast are preparing for residents forced from their homes due to flooding and power outages. sandy has already left its mark

on parts of north carolina. these pictures are from kure beach about 30 miles north of wilmington where rising tides eroded beaches, flooding homes. as many as 50 million people are in that hurricane's path. this morning dozens of flights in the bay area are cancelled. thousands of passengers stranded because of the impending storm. marla tellez is live at sfo with a look at sandy's effect on the bay area. good morning, marla. >> reporter: laura, good morning. let's put it to you this way, if you have plans to fly to just about anywhere along the eastern seaboard, you probably don't have those plans anymore because sfo, as you mentioned, has cancelled dozens of flights. we just spoke to the manager on duty here and he tells us that more than 150 flights have been cancelled so far. all departing flights to jfk, baltimore, boston, philadelphia, newark and washington, d.c. have been cancelled. and these are not just the early morning flights. some of these flights are
5:10 am
scheduled to leave this afternoon. for instance, a u.s. airways flight scheduled to leave at 2:55 this afternoon bound for newark is already cancelled. this of course due to hurricane sandy which is positioned to hit landfall tonight in new jersey. we just spoke to one passenger who works for fema. he is being deployed to the east coast to help with what the u.s. national hurricane center says is going to be a, quote, life-threatening storm surge. >> this is going to be bigger than anything they have ever witnessed. i mean i've been in katrina, rita, wilma, this is supposed to be a lot larger. >> reporter: and you're still okay if your flight is a go, you don't mind flying over there. >> no. >> reporter: that's your job? administrator that's wh >> that's what i do. >> reporter: john said at last check his flight was a go. he is flying into harrisburg, pennsylvania. something to keep in mind if flights are cancelled here at sfo, it is likely flights are also cancelled at oakland and san jose. so bottom line, if you do have a
5:11 am
flight to catch and you are headed to the east coast. the smartest thing you can do is to call ahead. now for the latest on hurricane sandy's whereabouts and its current strength, let's send it back into the studio where meteorologist christina loren is standing by. good morning, christina. >> good morning. i want to point out some of the very interesting components of this storm because you might be scratching your head. it's a category one hurricane, why are they saying it could be more damaging than katrina. well, it's not just the area that it's going to impact. we're talking about an area of low pressure stronger than we've ever seen before. what happened is a very powerful nor'easter merged with the hurricane. what i want to talk about is the actual low pressure. so when you traditionally have a hurricane, you're talking about 970, 980 millibars. that's how low the pressure will fall. we are talking about appear area of low pressure down to 946 millibars. that's a measurement of energy. so basically that means this thing is packing a triple
5:12 am
whammy. we're expecting a very, very high storm surge, anywhere in the area of 7 to 11 feet. that means the water will be sitting 7 to 11 feet higher than it traditionally does on the coast. we're also talking about treacherous rainfall and very, very damaging winds. a prolonged period of maybe 12 to 24 hours of battering winds potentially taking down trees, taking out power lines. that's why we're expecting outages. that's why we're talking about such a strong storm. you might be wondering why when we say category 1 storm it's not even on the high end of the scale. so once we continue throughout the morning we'll talk about the projected track and intensity. 2:00 a.m. is when we're expecting landfall, still a category 1 storm, the low end. category 1 storm starts at 74 miles an hour. so it will likely make landfall on the new jersey shore around 74 miles an hour. this is not a fast-moving system, though. it will continue to impact the northeast as we head through wednesday, into thursday, even friday. back to you, laura.
5:13 am
we'll have more on sandy and our local forecast coming up. >> we'll check back with you, thank you very much. it's 5:12. the air force's up with 29th rescue wing of the california national guard is getting ready to deploy to the eastern seaboard. its mission is to help rescue people who were affected by hurricane sandy. today a couple of c-130 aircraft with two specialized swift water rescue teams and two rescue helicopters are scheduled to leave moffett field, most likely headed to north carolina. >> once the hurricane begins to settle into the east coast, we'll send those forces where need be so the helicopters can go to one location, the guardian angel rescue forces, the swift water rescue forces can go to another. >> the 129th continues its preparation. it's going to be headed to take the lead in conducting whatever rescue operations are necessary on the east coast, overseeing all other agencies. it's one of only three rescue

will brighten things up as the home of the world series champs. once again they did it on the road. the giants declawing the tigers, sweeping their way to the seventh title in franchise history. we welcome back lawrence scott who is in detroit this morning. there was a new hero every night. >> reporter: there certainly is. i tell you what, in 2010 they were the band of misfits and clinched on the road beating the rangers in texas. this time around, what do you call them? the team that would not be eliminated. i kind of like that. because bruce bochy knew how to push all the right buttons with this team. >> it's just off the chart how these guys were not going to be denied and cared for each other. 25 unselfish guys. it's amazing what you can do when you play as a team. i know that term is used loosely, but these guys really bought into anything. i couldn't be prouder of them. these guys make it work because they set aside their own agenda. they didn't care what role they were in.

that's the only way this works or any of my moods. they come in and make it work. so give them the credit. i couldn't be prouder of a group of guys that were not going to be denied. all that we went through, our backs to the wall and we found a way. >> we bought into something you don't see happen very often. we bought into playing for each other. we bought into loving playing for each other. >> to get two in three years, it's unbelievable. it's something i definitely -- i think this time around i appreciate it even more because i understand the difficulty of doing it. >> reporter: yeah, buster posey, just tremendous. we know he's a bona fide star. whooupg when you think of where this guy is going. to not play last year and rebound in an mvp-like season. we'll hear more from all these guys from detroit.

i'm lawrence scott, we'll send it back to you in the studio. >> it's 5:19. the other big story of the day, hurricane sandy virtually shutting down new york city as they await one of the worst storms in that city's history. for the first time in more than a decade the stock exchange is shut down. scott mcgrew, it takes a lot for the exchanges to go dark. >> it was the september 11th attacks the last time we saw this so a pretty good indication of how seriously they're taking sandy. the new york stock exchange and nasdaq came to an agreement last night late to close today. they may be closed tomorrow as well. now, these people that you see on the floor, the market makers on the floor of the new york stock exchange, simply cannot make it to work today because there are no trains moving in new york city. now truth be told, in 2012 most trains are electronic, they don't involve human beings, therefore they're relatively immune to the storm.

so lack of things like order confirmation, clearinghouses, that's enough to throw things off pretty bad low. several companies including google have cancelled press events as well. dpo google was to announce a new phone in new york city. that is not happening. a hard-drinking engineer apparently left the new secret google phone in a bar. i'm not making this up. this according to news reports. swear. this has happened several times to apple as well. that's all true. but there is a joke running around in tech circles that a blackberry engineer left a blackberry in a bar, came back four days later and it was right where he left it. >> thank you very much, jokes and fun this early in the morning. thanks, fought. 5:21 right now. talking about the forecast here, pretty nice week ahead for us. we almost feel guilty with what they're dealing with on the east coast. >> waking up with the new world series champs right here, beautiful weather, but we do have 8 rain headed our way.
